Irish Number Plates
Northern Irish registrations — dateless, legal on any UK vehicle, from £69. The most affordable way to get a genuinely dateless private plate.
What Are Northern Irish Number Plates?
Northern Irish number plates — often called Irish plates or NI plates — are vehicle registrations issued in Northern Ireland. Every NI plate contains either the letter I or the letter Z within its letter sequence. This is what makes them instantly recognisable and, for many buyers, particularly appealing.
Unlike standard UK plates issued since 1963, Northern Irish registrations carry no year identifier. They cannot tell you anything about when the vehicle was registered. This makes them dateless — and dateless registrations can be assigned to any vehicle, regardless of its age.
Why Buy an Irish Number Plate?
Truly Dateless
No year identifier — goes on any vehicle regardless of age. Keep it through every car you own.
Excellent Value
Generally more affordable than equivalent English dateless plates. Dateless from £69.
Unique Letters
I and Z appear in every NI plate — opening up names and words unavailable on standard UK plates.
Fully Legal UK-Wide
Legal on any UK vehicle. Transferred through the DVLA exactly like any other registration.
How Do Irish Number Plates Work?
Northern Irish plates use a simple format: two or three letters followed by one to four numbers. The letter sequence always contains an I or Z — for example AZ, GAZ, MJZ, BEZ, IAZ. Numbers run from 1 to 9999.
The letter combinations relate to historic Northern Irish county areas — Belfast used codes from AZ to XI, Antrim used DZ and RZ, Armagh used IB and LZ, and so on. Over 30 area codes are in use. The system has remained in place long after the county boundaries themselves were changed.
Shorter number sequences are more desirable. A plate like GAZ 1 or BEZ 9 will command a significant premium over GAZ 4521. Four-digit combinations are the most common and the most affordable.
Names That Work Well with Irish Plates
Because every NI plate contains an I or Z, they are ideal for names that include those letters — which simply aren't available in standard UK plate formats:
These letter combinations appear in the NI registration sequences, so you can find plates where the area code letters spell your name or initials. For example, IAN 123, IVY 1, or GAZ 1 for someone named Gareth, Gary, or Garry.
Irish Plates vs English Dateless Plates
Both are dateless — neither reveals the age of the vehicle. The key differences are:
- Format: English dateless plates pre-date 1963 and use a different letter/number layout. NI plates have a distinct format with I or Z always present.
- Price: NI plates are generally more affordable than equivalent English dateless combinations, making them the best-value entry point for genuinely dateless registrations.
- Availability: Because NI plates contain I or Z, they offer combinations simply not possible with English plates — ideal for certain names and words.
If you want a dateless plate but your budget is limited, or if your name contains an I or Z, Northern Irish registrations are almost always the right choice.
