The date of first registration appears in section D.1 of your V5C logbook, near the top of the document. It is printed in day/month/year format and records when the vehicle was first registered with DVLA.
Why does the date of first registration matter for personalised plates?
DVLA rules state that a personalised number plate cannot make a vehicle appear newer than it actually is. The date of first registration sets the earliest age identifier you can legally display on your car.
Is the date of first registration the same as the manufacture date?
Not always. The manufacture date is when the vehicle was built; the date of first registration is when it was first registered with DVLA. For imported vehicles these dates can be months apart.
Can the date of first registration on my V5C be changed?
Only DVLA can update this date. If you believe it is incorrect, contact DVLA directly with supporting evidence such as import paperwork or the manufacturer's certificate of conformity.
Will a personalised plate transfer change the date of first registration?
No. Assigning or retaining a personalised number plate has no effect on the date of first registration shown on your V5C. It remains the date the vehicle was first registered, regardless of which plate it displays.
